ABOUT OUR HISTORY

COMMUNITY VISION

Our Children are Important

In 1977, the members of Wanchese Assembly of God caught a glimpse of a vision for its children - a Christian school, with Christian teachers, and a Christian curriculum. Pastor Robert D. Smith, Sr. became the "smith that bloweth the coals in the fire and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work" (Isaiah 54:16) and Wanchese Christian Academy was born. The first year in operation, 1978, students were enrolled in grades K5 through 12. Rev. William Skipper was the principal, guiding WCA through the precepts of the A.C.E. program. With polyester uniforms, ties, and new paces, the school was launched! Each succeeding pastor benefited the school. In 1986, under the pastorate of Rev. John Chase, Sr., WCA had a change of principal to Allen Kister and a change in curriculum to A-Beka bringing combined grades and open classroom teaching. Also, under Rev. Chase, a sports program was initiated and school spirit blossomed. It was during the growth spurt in 1989 that Rev. Robert (Bob) Smith, Jr. became principal. Dr. David Dalton became the pastor in 1994. He and his wife, Ruth, with the whole-hearted help of many of the church members, brought into existence the Whole Ministries Center, a complex that houses a lovely kitchen, snack area, and dining room, as well as a long-dreamed-of gymnasium. Under Dr. Dalton's ministry, K4 was added to WCA. Upon the departure of Rev. Smith in 2003, WCA was placed under the leadership of Mrs. Cherie Peters. Mrs. Peters held this position until 2006. Following her departure, alumna Rachel Meekins Thompson led WCA from 2007-2014. She introduced carousel teaching in the elementary grades and in partnership with Athletic Director Dickie Burrus, the sports program was reinstated. Today, WCA is under the leadership of Holly Strum.

OUR CLASSROOMS

Our facilities provide children with everything they need to prosper. We have a brand-new playground structure, indoor gym, library, and computer lab.  Our classrooms are big, but our small class size allows for individual attention.  Field trips, talent show, physical education, book fair, chapel services, spiritual emphasis week are just a small number of activities throughout the year to offer a well-rounded school experience.
